Spoiler warning ahead for some information about Five. Read at your own discretion!

High Five

Oh, Nerds!

—Five's catchphrase

Hector "High Five" Nieves (sometimes referred to as just Five) is the male protagonist in Glitch Techs.

He is voiced by Ricardo Hurtado.

Biography

Hector Nieves is a 15-year-old Mexican-American who's best friends with Miko. He works at Hinobi's store and he's also a Glitch Tech operator to fight and capture glitches. He's a more puzzle-oriented gamer compared to Miko and usually comes up with the plans and strategies to fight glitches, making him the brains to Miko's brawn.

Five was raised by his dad, Emilio, for most of his childhood. He grew up loving video games, and this love of video games was supported and encouraged by his dad who would often wait with him outside the Hinobi store for new releases. His dad would also take Five to Geri's vintage video game store every day after school. When he was 5 to 6 years old, he worked hard to help his dad raise money by doing many jobs, including working at his Papi's food truck, to make a reservation to have his birthday party at Joystick Jr, but then it was sadly ruined by the absence of the Ralphie Bear animatronic. It is also revealed that Five would accompany his dad to work regularly.

It's not specified when, but before the events of the series, Five's dad was arrested for hacking a firewall. After that, Five began living with his grandparents and helping them with the food truck more. Fortunately, his grandparents also support his love for video games. They even willingly took Five to the Hinobi Smash tournament when they discovered he had received a bracelet that indicated he was one of the best gamers in the city.

Personality

High Five is a nice and caring boy who loves playing video games and will do anything to achieve his goal, never giving up. Generally Five respects most people but isn't afraid to stand up to others when he feels it's necessary to do so. While Five is usually logical and responsible, when under stress and pressure (or a strong emotion in general), he becomes impulsive and doesn’t think things fully out or clearly. When scared or nervous, he’ll even begin to over-think things and get stuck in his head.

Five does have a tendency to fear the unknown, and when assigned a job, he is often afraid to fail it, leading people like Mitch to steer him wrong. Five often gets stuck in his own head, unable to act in the moment, his mind too full to go the distance.

When Five does get out of his own head, he's capable of putting the puzzle of any game together, such as in "Castle Crawl" when he kept all the loot gathered just in case he would need something later. His plans rarely fail, and when his instincts catch up, he's one of the most dangerous Glitch Techs around.

While Five is someone who prefers to think before he acts, when provoked with strong emotions such as anger or panic, he can become impulsive and will jump on people or even sometimes, though rarely, reset their memory on purpose or on accident.

Five also shows a preference to stick to and follow the rules but isn't afraid, albeit hesitant, to break them. Five is also shown to lie sometimes keep himself and friends from getting in trouble or to impress others. And often those lies get him into trouble and will make a situation worse as shown in "The Real Glitch Techs".

Appearance

He is tall, very slim, and has fairly dark tan skin. He has a puffy hairstyle with a galaxy blueish-purple/indigo hue, along with slim arms and legs.

In his casual wear, he can usually be seen wearing a green graphic t-shirt with a black elbow length shirt underneath. He also sports grey skinny jeans and a pair of Hinobi sneakers. Sometimes he wears a green hoodie with the number "5" on it. On other occasions, he can be seen wearing a different shirt from the graphic green shirt such as a yellow one in "BUDS" and in a flashback in "Collection Quest". In "Ralphie Bear", Five can be seen wearing a white Ralphie Bear themed tee. Five is also seen wearing a yellow hoodie with "05" on it very briefly when Miko was looking for him with Lexi's phone in "Age of Hinobi"

While working in the Hinobi store, his outfit is still the same except he wears a blue Hinobi polo shirt over his black elbow length shirt instead of one of his graphic tees.

Five can also be seen wearing a standard Hinobi tech support jumpsuit, and he also is seen wearing glitch tech armor when his tech gauntlet is activated.

Relationships

Miko

Miko is Five's partner and one of his best friends. He enjoys passing time with her on the job and out of it, and they frequently play games together. He has much trust in her: even when Mitch pointed out she could be a glitch with a very solid argument in the episode "Find the Glitch", Five argued that it didn't matter because he would continue trusting her.

Before meeting face-to-face for the first time, Five had often played against Me_K.O. in online matches but had lost to her every time, making him a little irked when they finally met.

Mitch

Five was fanatic of Mitch as a gamer, for this is one of the most tolerant with his arrogant self centered behavior for his trust in his skill and knowledge, but doesn't have problem to directly confront him when he crosses the line. Aside all Five openly considers him as friend or at least a frenemy.

Casino

Casino is a childhood friend of Five that he hadn't seen in two years before the events of "Smashozaurs". They both have a shared love for the titular video game featured in the episode, Smashozuars. Due to regularly accompanying his dad to work and then not seeing him for a full two years, Casino felt abandoned by Five for a while.

Ridley

A kid Five and Miko found that is a a skilled modder. She made a new Chomp Kitty that was purple and named it Horn. She uses Glitches that were caught and tweaks there AI and appearance to make them nice pets

Zahra

As a more experienced Glitch Tech, Five is impressed by and finds Zahra cool. As the series progresses, they become friends and Zahra even develops a crush on Five. So far, Five is unaware of her feelings about him.

Haneesh

Haneesh is a more experienced Glitch Tech that Five respects and looks up to. After "Alpha Leader", the feeling of respect became mutual.

Bergy

They became good friends in "Collection Quest" and often went on missions together after that, indicating they are on good terms.

Phil

As manager of the Bailey branch of Hinobi's Glitch Techs, Phil is Five's boss. Five respects him as a superior but is willing to hold his ground against him in cases like bringing Ridley aboard Glitch Techs.

Abuela & Papi

Abuela & Papi Nieves are Five's grandparents. Before becoming a Glitch Tech for Hinobi, Five used to work at their food truck. They support his love for video games.

Emilio

Emilio is Five's dad, and they're still on good terms even though Five is clearly upset by the fact his dad is in prison.

Geri

Geri is a family friend who is close with Five and his dad. Before the series, Five hadn't seen her since his dad was arrested.

They were eventually traded in to combine Five and Miko's EXP into legally keeping Ally, though Five earned them back before their reappearance in "Collection Quest".
  • Skins
    • StegaZaur Exo Suit: A large, heavy-duty armor skin first featured in "Smashozaurs", directly inspired by Five's favorite character from the series. The suit was primarily used to match against the strength of Casino's TriTops form, though it was eventually wrecked.
    • Modded Wizard (temporary): A custom mod skin of a wizard from the game "Fire Age 4", created by Ridley and compatible with the data of her modified Glitches, allowing Five to battle and capture them.
  • Hoverboard: First seen in "Smashozaurs", it's another travel tool primarily used for quick escapes. It can carry about two people.
  • Speed boost: Augments his speed for a short period of time.
  • Duplication Mod: Created by Ridley, it is a energy blast that makes a glitch split into two exact duplicates.
  • Stationary cannon: a big cannon similar to a tank's with a powerful blast but needs the help of another glitch tech to deploy and use. He and Nameless used it together in its only appearance, so it is not clear whether it belongs to Five or Nameless.

Trivia

  • Five is an only child, and his only family members to appear onscreen are his grandparents. It's eventually revealed in Ping that Emilio Nieves, Five's dad, is currently in prison for white-hat hacking.
  • In the show's development, Five started as more of a typical protagonist but as details were added, the GT crew drew from Eric Robles' real life. Other inspirations were elements of Peter Parker, Marty McFly and Will Smith. • Five's hair is based on Ray Santiago's.
  • At his full height, Five is visibly taller than Miko and the other Bailley Glitch Techs.

  • So far, Five is the only character shown in the series to fully recover memories after a reset.
  • Five's favorite videogame was Chomp Kitty.
  • Five plays Sorcery Cards.
